［要旨］ Several studies were conducted in eastern Indonesia during the 1990s up to early 1998. One of these studies focused on the socio-economic life of island communities in the Sangihe Islands, which are located about 5 degrees North of the equator in the western Pacific rim. The objectives of this study are to explore and to elucidate the socio-economic life of the people living on the remote small islands. How the island people think and choose their own way of living is the question which has been stimulating me to carry out the fieldwork there. The findings were that the traditional strategy of life still predominated in some island communities of this area. On the other hand, the other communities were in the transformation process for the modern way of thinking and living. Such situation is clearly indicated by changes in fish resource management, capitalization of production tools, fish marketing and yield share systems, and consumption patterns.

［要旨］ 今年7月1日から5日にかけてモーリシャスにおいて国際島嶼学会（International Small Islands Studies Association）の第5回国際大会が開催され，20を越える国々からおよそ120名が参加しました．大会では「持続可能な開発のための教育」「島嶼システム・マネジメントにおける国連環境計画（UNEP）」「島嶼住民と政治経済学」「地球のなかの島々」「知識アセスメントとテレマティクス」「島嶼住民の生活における社会的・文化的諸問題」「島嶼住民と海洋」「小型島嶼と生物的多様性」というテーマのもとに活発な報告と議論がおこなわれました．多島圏研究センターの第1回研究会では，本センターの研究活動の進路を考えるうえでも重要である本大会の動向を報告します．あわせて，7月19日に長崎県諌早市で開かれた日本島嶼学会設立総会について中野和敬教授（多島研）からの報告もあります．

［主旨］ 現生有孔虫の研究と化石有孔虫の研究を通して、現在の環境を過去からの継続及び地史的な変化の上に捉え、現在の環境と有孔虫との関係を明らかにして環境を考える資料を提供する。（企画：鹿児島大学　八田明夫）
